What Are Dentures and Their Types? - Austin General Dentistry

Dentures have long been the go-to dental appliance for replacing missing teeth. Although these are not the only options for replacing missing teeth, your dentist can recommend the best option, whether it's a denture, dental bridge, or dental implant. Are you looking for tooth replacement options in Austin General Dentistry?

What are Dentures

Dentures allow people who have lost teeth to chew and bite food typically and smile confidently. Dentures are removable tooth replacements. They are, of course, artificial, but they have the same appearance, feel, and function as natural ones. Losing some or all of your teeth can hurt your health and appearance. It can distort your appearance and make eating difficult.

There are two types of Dentures: 1 Complete Denture and 2 Partial Dentures

Here, I will guide you on both types of Dentures

1 Complete Denture

As previously stated, complete dentures replace your entire set of teeth. They are typically made of plastic (acrylic) and are classified as conventional or immediate.

A traditional denture is ready to be placed in the mouth 8 to 12 weeks after extracted teeth. Waiting 8-12 weeks before fitting dentures will allow your gums to heal from the extractions while allowing gum shrinkage in the boney ridge during this time.

Immediate dentures are made ahead of time and placed immediately after the teeth are extracted. The most significant benefit of having immediate dentures is that you will walk out of the clinic with a complete set of teeth; you will not have to go weeks without teeth! However, there is one disadvantage.

Unlike traditional dentures, which require a waiting period and gum healing, immediate dentures are placed immediately after extractions and do not require gum healing. This causes the bones and gums to shrink over time, requiring more adjustments to fit comfortably during the healing process.

2 Partial Dentures

When only a few teeth remain, partial dentures are used. The denture's base is made of metal or plastic (acrylic), and the teeth are usually acrylic.

Partially dentures have a more natural appearance. There are two types of partial dentures: removable and permanent. A partial denture typically consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base linked by a metal framework that holds the denture in the mouth. A removable partial denture is less expensive and allows the dentist to replace multiple teeth with a single appliance.

A removable partial denture is the most cost-effective way to replace several missing teeth (RPD). RPD comes in various forms, from low-cost dental flippers to precision attachment partials. When only a few teeth remain, partial dentures are used. The denture's base is made of metal or plastic (acrylic), and the teeth are usually acrylic.

Final Words

Dentures are one option for tooth replacement, but dental implants and bridges are also popular and highly recommended. If you are looking for tooth replacement treatments, consult with your dentist about the best option for you.
